Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) is proceeding with multiple projects to
upgrade approximately 11km of Highway 2 through the Red Deer area. These projects are
aimed at improving safety, reducing congestion, and modernizing the province’s busiest
transportation corridor.
Highway 2, also known as the QE2, conveys millions of vehicles every year as it connects
Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton and beyond. It is a critical route for commuters, commercial traffic
and the travelling public in general.
The first project – Section A – is already under construction. Workers are replacing the aging
overpasses across the Canadian National Railway north of Highway 11A, and widening
Highway 2 from four lanes to six lanes in the vicinity of the new overpasses.
The second project – Section B – will widen Highway 2 from four lanes to six lanes between
Highway 11 and two kilometres north of Highway 11A.
The third project – Section C – will upgrade Highway 2 through the Red Deer River valley. It will
widen Highway 2 from four lanes to eight between 32 Street and Highway 11. This section of
Highway 2 experiences approximately 20% higher traffic volumes than other sections in the Red
Deer area.
This third project also includes replacing the aging Red Deer River bridges and improving
substandard curves and sight lines to meet modern safety standards. The Highway 2 alignment
will need to shift significantly to the east, impacting the western edges of both Heritage Ranch
and Maskepetoon Park.
Section C is currently in the design phase. While the highway alignment has been finalized
some details of the project and its impact mitigation strategies are still under development.
Environmental reviews are continuing as the design work progresses.
The project team anticipates finalizing the design by the end of 2027, with construction possibly
beginning in spring 2028. TEC is hosting a public information session at Festival Hall in Red
Deer on June 18 to talk about Section C, share information and answer questions.
